We now have more than 150 different ferns, many spread around the garden as well as those in the fern bed and pond area. Many of our newer additions are planted in what we have dubbed "fern alley", the new path through the autumn and winter bed. The collection is slowly being built up, specialising in those native varieties that were discovered in the North West by the avid fern hunters of the Victorian era and other more modern specialists.
The Osmunda family is well represented with 6 different types to date, and other rarities include; Cheilanthes tomentosa, Todea barbara, Lophosoria quadripinnata and the beautiful Polystichum setiferum 'Bevis'. We are busy propogating from spores so look out for some rather special ferns on the plant stall.
