This
is the lowest part of the garden and was originally home
to a very ramshackle wooden greenhouse. When this blew
down in a gale, we had the golden opportunity to turn
the area into a wildlife pond and small bog garden. The
site had the advantage of several very large, moss covered
boulders which provided a natural backdrop and the ideal
place to create a gentle cascade of water into the pond, a favourite bathing spot for the birds.
The damp and shady conditions at the back of the pond
are ideal for part of our fern collection, along with candelabra
primulas and anemone rivularis.
Around
the sunnier seating area we have concentrated on scented
plants, including honeysuckle, jasmine, philadelphus and
lilac. The adjacent bog garden is home to a range of primulas as
well as a number of irises and astilbes.
