This border is primarily planted with shrubs, with an underplanting largely of bulbs, and euphorbias. The aim was to provide a border with a long season of interest and one which would look good when viewed from the house. Foliage colour is the dominant feature and key shrubs include Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’, Elaegnus x ebbingei ‘Limelight’, and Berberis thunbergii ‘Aurea’, ‘Rose Glow’ and ‘Harlequin’. Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’, Physocarpus ‘Diabolo’ and a recently planted Sambucus ‘Black Lace’, add deep red notes which are picked up in late summer by the flower heads of Clerondendron bungeii. In the spring, before the deciduous shrubs come into leaf, the new red shoots of Euphorbia griffithii ‘Fireglow’ contrast with the golden yellow of dwarf narcissi. Later seasonal highlights are provided by red and yellow crocosmias. Golden-leaved hardy fuchsias (f.’Genii’ and ‘Empress of Prussia’) and a selection of deep red heucheras fill the front of the border.
